Periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease, is common among adults in the United States. Gum disease is even seen among people who think they are taking great care of their teeth. So if you believe you may have gum disease, it is nothing to be embarrassed about, and you are definitely not alone.

However, gum disease is not something you have to live with. There are ways to help prevent gum disease from developing, and there are ways to manage it once it has developed. The team at Kennedy Dental has listed four tips below to help you keep your gums healthy.

1. Brush Your Teeth Regularly

Brushing your teeth is one of the most important aspects of oral hygiene. You should brush your teeth at least twice per day for a minimum of two minutes. When you brush, you should be mindful of reaching cracks and crevices, and you should pay special attention to your gumline.

2. Floss Every Day

Flossing every day is another vital piece of oral hygiene. Flossing removes debris and plaque that your toothbrush can’t reach. That debris often builds up around your gumline, inflaming your gums and leading to the development of gum disease. For that reason, flossing is an important aspect of prevention and treatment.

3. Quit Smoking

Smoking is not good for your oral health. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, smoking is the most significant risk factor for gum disease. We recommend quitting smoking as a prevention method and as a treatment for gum disease.

4. Schedule Regular Dental Cleanings

Dental exams and teeth cleanings can help you rid your teeth of plaque and tartar that may be impossible to remove at home with your toothbrush. A professional dental cleaning will be thorough, and you’ll leave our dental office with truly clean teeth, which can help prevent gum disease. Dental cleanings are also a common treatment for the early stages of gum disease.
